I was just listening to Coast To Coast AM with George Noory...he said that this Tsunami will most likely cause the death toll to be way over 60,000 once the disease and famine and all that start taking place...Im praying for these people...
youre right about tsunamis vs regular swells... to put it into perspective more, a decent to big normal swell will have an interval of about 13-20 seconds, and a tsunami can have an interval of over one hour...
also, noticed you live on the central coast, where at? im living in grover beach right now...
Incredible satelite photos of Sri Lanka during the Tsunami. We've all heard of the receding tide but I never pictured what these images show. I can't believe anyone lived on the beach. Imagine snorkeling and all of a sudden you are hundreds of yards offshore and nothing but sand between you and your family.
Any navy vets here that were trained or performed submarine duty? What would the effect of a Tsunami on a sub be, assuming you're submerged and not riding along topside.
Great Question: I think a sub would be fine as long as it didn't colide with anything. I was in the surface Navy, but I would think an emergency ascent would remove a sub from danger for the most part. Just a geuss though.
edit: The more I think about it... I have no idea! Would it be forced deeper? Moved hundreds of miles off course. You can bet we had atleast one deployed in the indian ocean. I'll bet we'll never hear anything either way.
If the sub was 90 tangent to the pressure wave what would it do.....?
If parallel to the movement I would think it would still be an O-WOW....that pressure wave was traveling at <> 400mph...
A number of different agencies are saying within 4/6 months, the death toll will be over 200K…truly sad!

I don't think ships or subs on surface or under are affected. Note two scuba divers were unaware of the tsunami and are among the survivors.

Would do nothing really, unless you were in 200ft or less of water...
again, the surface waves are more dangerous to them...
the tsunami is just a pulse over a HUGE area...
A bud of mine was on the nuke subs for 5 years and said they had several waves that were close to 60 ft pull them up to the surface from 100 ft under the water. it was quite a ride. worse part is when your screw loses bite in the water... you are floundering around without control or direction...
They showed a small uninhabited rock island off the coast of ****et, Thailand where sail boats were helping stranded people. I have pictures of this island because I went scuba diving there in 95'. Kind of sobering to know that I was actually there before.
My heart aches for all those people, I can't even begin to imagine what they are going through. I had to turn off the news to stop crying last night, so very sad and not even the news can cover what is happening there now. The count will continue to rise for weeks, so many other things will play a factor in the death toll now.
Sinjin and I were planning to going to ****et last October and had to cancel because I had to work, I am sorry we didn't make it, it will be years before it returns to the beauty Indonesia is known for
My heart goes out to all the families that were torn apart.
On MSN they said the water had receeded for 50 minutes and people stood there wondering where the water went and thought it was because of the moon. They did not start running until they saw the water coming back, then it really was too late. At 100s of mphs it catches up real fast.
