Shocks

The shocks on my 91 F250 seem to be working but it tore out one of the shock towers and at first I thought, well, seized up shock but it seems to be working, fairly stiff but working. No leaks, so do they change as they age or if they are working are they fine? The decompression seems a little slow but I dont have a new one right here to compare it to. You should not be able to move the shock when it's extended. If it moves (more than about an 1/8 of an inch by hand) it's shot. If you've never replaced the shocks they are over due, as they are most likely the originals, and probable wore out over a year ago. Put new OEM shocks on it and you'll be be happy.

You mean I shouldnt be able to compress it? They feel similar to the dozens of other shocks I have ever done. I was wondering if they react differently with age despite feeling normal. I compress them and it does however seem to be slow on decompression. I am going to replace them in the morning, it is the second set but was just curious as to what put so much stress on the tower. There are pic on the link I posted. I have seen towers fail when they were seized but that doesnt seem to be the case here. It could been the continious hammer of my roads also. I have repaired dozens of rear hangers where they have filled with dirt and water and rusted (one of Fords better ideas to not leave a drain hole) but this is the first of this kind on the front where there is no obvious cause.
