Just got oil sample results back just as I suspected high levels of coolant. Local Ford dealer replaced intake gaskets in the spring (extended warranty) in my wife's 98 explorer sport (4.0) still was useing a little coolant. Is this engine known for a head gasket problem or was it a poor installation of intake gaskets? Thanks 98 explorer-03 ranger fx4-89 f150 4x4-91 crown vic
I'll assume that that the '98 Explorer is the OHV version.
I have to think a lower & upper intake gasket replacement job on a 4.0L OHV would be performed competently by a Ford technician, it's a pretty straightforward repair, especially for someone who does it for a living, and the Ford gaskets are high quality, too.
I'll also assume you have had no overheating problems and that there is no white stinky-sweet smoke billowing from the tailpipe. With that in mind, I'd be more inclinded to think about a slightly cracked head then a blown headgasket. I just don't hear a alot about the gaskets failing on the 4.0L, at least not as much as I hear about cracked heads.
Just got the news that both heads were cracked. Warranty will cover rebuilds and gaskets, etc. All but labor to change the oil and the 2nd gallon of coolant. So I lucked out. 4.0 pushrod engine
