just had this happen last night, came back from a road trip and as i came off the highway, i heard a little grinding noise, my e-brake light came on and stayed on and my brake pedal has to be pushed farther than normal to stop. any ideas guys?
The brake light comes on when the pedal travels farther than it should have to to bring the truck to a stop as well as when the E-brake is applied. I'll second kameroth's post. If the rear shoes wear too far down the gap between shoes and drum surface gets big enough that the pins will slip out if the wheel cylinders and the cylinders will just keep expanding until the pistons pop out of the bores. You really dont' want that to happen..its really messy.

Yup.
Also - a spring on one of the rears brakes may have broken. I've seen it happen, and the end result is a bunch of broken metal parts flying around in the drum because there is no tension without the spring and everything just sort of falls off.
I agree with everyone and do yourself a favor. Buy a new spring kit when you put new brakes on the rear. They are cheap and the old springs lose tension with all of the heat generated over the years.
