There are plenty of things that you can do to it to get more oomph out of it.

First off, a full tune up with all filters would be my first thing on the list.

After that, a tubular exhaust headers or EFI shortie manifolds will work great also. Also a slightly larger single exhaust will help here too, with some highflow cats/mufflers.
Ditch the TFI ignition and convert to a duraspark setup and install a 4v manifold and carb. Or go for a redily available motorcraft 2150 2v as seen on many ford small block v8's.

Those are about the simplest bolt on upgrades for these engines.

then a littlefield blower and a hot crane cam haha just kiddin, but as far as intake, if you want to try a cool air cleaner get a GREEN filter, there better then K&N and there cheaper.

well the 300 isn't the best thing to use and go fast with, but i don't see why all the fuss is about them. i just got another in a swb f100 with a 303 manual and it goes pretty well. only gets 11 mpg though. yeah get rid of the feeder carb and tfi and install a turbo muffler and some efi exhaust manifolds.

My '84 with the 300 six, and top shifter overdrive will do over 85 on the interstates here in the mountains. Maybe your motor just needs some attention. Its a goodie!

It must just be a tired engine. A 300 with log exhaust/stock 1bbl and 3.00-3.50 gears should push a truck to 85 easily.

before I started the brake/suspention work I've had my 79 2wd well over 100 a couple times but it has a OD transmission.

Theoretical question: Would overdrive really give you a better shot at a high speed, let's say 100?
My 83 300 OD doesn't have much quick power cause the gearing is so low (#).
A non - OD would be geared to get going, although I guess it could run out of rpms to get to 100, don't know.
Somehow I keep coming back to Nascar cars....geared so they run at high rpm at high speed....plenty of power "right now" if wanted. Unlike my truck....you want power? Wait a few minutes, I'll get you there!!
