Question Pulling in Over Drive

I just bought a F-350, 2000, 6-speed,129,000K mi. It's got a rebuilt tranny, new water pump, I hope it will be good. I'm a new Ford driver and trying to figure out how to pull with it. When I tried it the other day, I fiugered I didn't need to pull in OD, but the RPM's never fell. So, what is everbody doing when towing? I plan on hauling a lot with this truck and don't want to mess the tranny again.
Thanks and Merry Christmas.

Once you are out on the freeway put it in over drive, no biggy. If you are in a mountainous area pulling hills and stuff lock it out. Around town lock it out so the RPM's do stay a little higher for better stop and go etc.

How much wheight are you pulling? any thing under 10K should not be a problem at free way speeds. I've pulled 16K of horse w/ the 6sp in od @ 65 no problem and it would go faster but I dont haul animals faster than that incase I have to stop in a hurry.

With the six speed we call it "downshifting"

Don't worry about towing in 6th, it'll be fine. Just drop down a gear when you start to lug it.

Maintain the proper oil level and change it more frequently when it gets hot and it should last forever.

One question no one asked what rearend ratio? I suspect your weak link is the clutch, if it is OEM.

You said "New to Ford" but are you new to Diesel?

Rearend?, I dont have the book on it, and couldn't tell be the door post. I don't have a clue about the clutch. As far a Diesel, I know a little, and I talk to a lot of people...
I keep it maintained and filters changed.

One thing you have to be careful of is to check your coolant anti cavitation additive (SCA) levels regularly and change coolant yearly there is a dipstick test you use to check SCA available from Ford or here http://www.dieselpage.com/main.shtml There is a way to decode rear end ratio from the door post tag but I dont kow the code. You can get a fair idea from MPH at RPM so watch and see what RPM is at 65 MKPH

I pull a 30' travel trailer , around 7000# when loaded and ready to go . It runs down the road just fine in OD ( 5 speed ) . You should be ok in OD , just don't lug it before you down shift to 5th. These trucks love to pull !
