OK, someone here must know something bout Ford tractors as well. I am hopeing for some forums like this one -- does anyone know of any good web sites or forums about old ford tractors?
I got an 861 from the PO of my "property" here in Missouri. He had it "restored" but that means different things to different people. Looks nice, but I am trying to be careful to the internals. 172 4 cyl engine.
He used it with a blade to push snow in the winter, but appears to have been using standard, 30w oil in it. Of course, the original users manual says 5,10, 20, 30, 40 etc depending on conditions. But why shouldn't I use a good multi-visc oil? Especially if I want to start her on a cold day. I was thinking 10w-30, Rotella. It was 2 degrees F here the other morning, and 30w oil does NOT sound appropriate.
Also, anyone know much about the valves in these engines? Am I OK with unleaded gas? He said it was OK, but I have no idea if the "restoration" included hard valve seats.
It was converted to 12v with a 1 wire alternator that seems to be working fine --- has the resistor and points type dizzy. I think I may convert that to Pertronix eventually. Or I wonder if any of the Duraspark dizzies from later engines might fit? Something a good Ford tractor forum could answer I am sure.
Well, Merry Christmas to all!!!! Thanks in advance.......
