Symptoms of this are noisy torque converter at idle. Sounds like the torque converter is making contact with bellhousing. Sound only noticable at idle or when throttle not depressed. Finally one day after backing up out of a parking place I proceeded to to drive forward about 3 feet then bang RPM's shot up I just sat there wouldn't move in any gear. Engine running with the sound of rubbing metal coming from the driveplate. I shut the engine off an from then on it wouldn't start, starter would turn, just not the crankshaft. Seems to me like they cheaped out on the driveplate in 96. I replaced with a 95 driveplate which in my opinion was much higher quality. Also replaced the torque converter while I had it apart, since the one in there had taken a beating and I didn't want to drop the trans out twice. Now all is well!
