I'm looking at getting a new Explorer for my wife, but have a few questions. The local dealer only has V6 models on the lot, but we want a V8. I'll special order, but want to be sure she'll be happy before I do. She has a 97 V8 2WD, and is likes the performance. How does the 04/05 Explorer V8 compare for acceleration? I've looked for 0-60 times, but can't find anything on the 97.
the 97with 2wd is probrally mid to high 8's if it were me i would go with the v8 basically because the only thing you would be sacraficing would be gas milage but i think the 05 with the v8 will still be slower than her previous explorer just cause it is heavier.
Stock vs stock, to 05 will smoke the 97. Did you drive the 05 6cyl? I would bet that a 2wd 05 6cyl would beat the 97 V8. The key to the new ones performance is the 5spd auto. Get the tow package so you get the 3.73's and the truck will take off really well from a dead.
I have a 2002 4wd with running boards, third seat, and V8 so it is pretty heavy. All stock with just the airbox snorkel removed it ran 15.86 in the quarter at 83 mph. With a K&N filter, extra hole drilled in the airbox, and a custom tailpipe with Magnaflow muffler, it ran 15.42 @ 86mph. I am pretty sure that I have seen 302 Explorers in the or high 16's.
My Dad had a 2002 2wd 6cyl without the 3rd seat and it ran a best 16.50 @ 80mph. His 2003 6cyl 2wd with a 3rd seat has run a best of 17.00 @ 79 mph. I don't think that the weight of the 3rd seat made that much of a difference, so test drive a few of them and make sure you get the fast one.
FYI, the new 4.6 is fast, but also very hungry. My wife's is driven mostly in the city and gets between 13 and 16 mpg (with the wife driving). My mom's 2wd 6cyl is only about 1-2mpg better.
