The Ranger is a 88 4X4 2.9, 5 speed, air, ps, pb 136K. It runs really good for the miles.
I think there is a short in the ignition system.
The engine will, very quickly, shut down then "catch". If you are driving the tach will drop 200-300 rpm, just for an instant. This will cause the truck to "buck".
It will do it sitting in the driveway too. It's like you hit a kill swicth then released it real quick.
It will only do it once or twice a day, that's what makes so hard to locate.
I have replaced the mass air sensor, oxygen sensor, ignition module, cap, rotor, wires and plugs. Checked and replaced all the vacuum lines.
All of the filters are good.
I checked the signal voltage on the throttle position sensor, it checks good.
The instruction sheet that came with the ignition module had a lot of check this, check that information on it. One of the things it said that all Fords with factory tachs can experiance an ignition short out. Anyone had this happen?
I recommend you change the PIP ( pick-up coil)in the dist. before going any further. If that isn't the cure, verify amperage capability of the wires leading from the dist. back to the computer for a possible "weak" wire. i had an Escort do the same thing, tach would fall out then regain, turned out being the computer ' cause that's what drives the TACH in an EEC-IV system.
