I have a 94 Ford Ranger 4.0 4x4. My truck is getting horrible gas mileage. 12-14mpg tops. I have to run high octane gas, or it will sparknock something awful. It has 115,000 miles on it. I took it to a Ford dealer and they hooked it to the computer and even did a comperssion check. Everything checked out ok. I've put new plugs and wires on it. No difference. If anyone could be of any information, please let me know. thanks jim
It was horrendous--My Ranger 3.0 knocked even with 93 octane super premium
gas (of course I had to be under heavy load and accelleration). I asked
everyone I could, sent it to the dealer for diagnosis, and replaced hundreds
of dollars of O2 sensors (all three of them), the MAS, the plugs, the wires,
etc. etc. and not one of those helped. Then I betook myself to the local
Advance auto parts, invested in a shiny new 180 degree thermostat and a
gasket, and installed it--- VOILA!!!! No more knocks, bangs and rattles
when accellerating!!! By reducing the engine temp 15 degrees I can now save
over .25 cents PER GALLON!! Amazing. And the idea did not come from the
Ford people, but from my own desperate imagination. I have since then put
400 miles on the vehicle, and it's been a pleasure to drive in the hills of
Kentucky and Indiana. My recommendation to all who have a Ford 3.0 litre
engine is replace that 195 degree thermostat asap.
I have the same truck 1994 4x4 XLTwith the 4.0 I currently have 50,000 miles on it and have owned it since new. I have never been able to due better then 14 MPG. When I dump this piece of ##### I will never buy a Ranger 4x4 again. I can't begin to tell you how much money this ****box has cost me between the oil leaks and Ford design flaws in the front wheel hubs as well as the locked callipers and replacement of brakes in their entirety. All of which happen right after the warranty was up. Consumer Reports gives our truck all black ratings, they sure are right. I wish that I never dropped the $23,000.00 in 1994. Good luck
