Question Two piece bed seam

Has anyone done a interim fix for the rust that seems to collect around the truck bed seam? Also, what can be done to keep the rust from coming back?
Thanks,
Scott

I know some people clean them out and use body filler to smooth out the bed. I am going to do this in the spring when it warms up a little.

I cleaned out the rust really well and bondoed the seams smoothing it out with my finger to make the transition then sanded it all out nice and smooth. I had the truck painted. That was three years ago and it still looks great.

There is probabally a more professional way to do it but this worked for me.

That's what I thought: Bondo. But I thought there might be a special material that is specifially for such a task. Thanks for the info.

The seams are suppposed to be filled with seam sealer but the bondo probably looks better. I used seam sealer on mine and it looks OK but not perfect.

once you clean it out use por 15 to prevent anymore rust and you can use lead to fill the seam.

The RIGHT way to do it is to sandblast every inch of steel to white metal. Use a good self etching epoxy primer and then buy some quality 3M seam sealer that the OE's use on new cars. Can't remember the part number but it's on ebay all the time. Don't buy the crap seam sealer that napa or most paint shops sell. That stuff does not tool whatsoever and expands with temperature so your paint cracks. The rust is usually 10 times worse on the inside of the seam than it is on the outside. I did a box awhile ago that fell apart after I sandblsted the bedside seam. The rust was all that was holding it together. I pulled the panels together and tig welded tiny beads every 2 inches down the entire seam just deep enough that the seam sealer would hide the welds. The bed still looks perfect 4 years later and should be good for a lifetime.

I agree that you should have the seam sandblasted all the way down in the seam as averagef250 posted earlier. I had that done to mine, then my body man used some stuff he called "all Metal" to fill it back in and then he used some type of tool to shape the line back to original. The tool he used looks something similar to a tool painters use to clean up caulk lines. Mine was done 16 years ago and still no sign of rust. I do keep my truck garaged all the time and baby it though..........You can go to my gallery and check it out.

On my truck I was going to sand blast the seam then since the bed was off the truck tilt it up up on one side and pore in some of the rust killer stuff from rustolium in the seam then prime it then use the seam putty ???
