Mallory Or Msd????

I want to install a new ignition system in my truck. I have a 71 f250 Camper Special with a freshly rebuilt 390 with a 2 bl carb. It is stock except for headers. I don't do any heavy towing or racing, it's just my daily driver. I'm trying to decide which to go with Mallory or MSD. Any advice?? Thanks.

I've had a Mallory ignition in mine since 97.
Unilite dizzy, Hyfire IV, and Promaster coil.

Another thing you could look at would be a Pertronix unit.
You keep your distributor. Replace the points with the Pertronix unit, and add a FlameThrower coil.
I haven't heard anything bad about them.

I don't think you can go wrong with either one. I think you'll find MSD has a larger following. I ran a Mallory Unilite distributor and Promaster coil in my 74 Bronco with a 2bbl. I picked up 2mpg, saw a noticable increase in power throughout the rpm range, and found I had easier starts, especially when cold. I like the Unilite's infrared triggering, something MSD does not have.

I myself like the MSD better because of the great customer service and warrenties. Both of the products are great and will provide years of service in any vehicle but MSD has ben tried and true and that is what i run in all my performance engines.

I replaced my points distributor with a rebuilt dura spark. I added an MSD brain box, and used a stock coil. Truck gained about 2 MPG, noticeable power improvement, and starts up like it's fuel injected. I have a friend that runs the mallory stuff on his, and it works just as well. It may be just a matter of preference, or opinion.

Petronix trouble

My 390 quit running last week so I pulled the petronix unit and put the points back in and it fired right up.I put a new petronix unit in today and the truck wont start at all.I found a couple of articles online that imply that the petronix units dont like the MSD Red coils and can be burned up by this coil.I put the first petronix into the truck in 1995 and added the MSD and big cap about a year ago.Anybody hear anything about this problem before? Not trying to knock any product just trying to find answers to my problem.

I guess Pertronix recommends their FlameThrower coil for a reason other than to just make money... I'm running their setup with a big cap, no problems.
