Hey guys, I'm in the 4.2 forums 90% of the time, and I am now looking at a 2000 Expy. It's the Eddie Bauer edition and is fully loaded. The dealer is asking $12,000 for it. It has 95,000 miles on it which is the only downside.
What I want to know is if there are any known problems with that year model, and what would you suggest as far as a toon-up goes. It runs great and sounds normal (ie: no whining or scratching sounds). I think so far it's a sweet deal, but I need to hear the experts opinion on this. I owned a 95 Ford Explorer XL at one point, and it was nice. It just was too old for my wife. Thanks in advance for the replys!
My wife and I bought our 2000 Exp Eddie Bauer in September 2003. We paid $19,000.00 for ours and other then 74,000 miles on it this baby was in mint condition and we love it.
The only issue we have had to date (knocking on wood here) is the IAC value and a CD-player problem (typical wear and tear?), not bad for a vehicle that is now 5 years old.
I've read that some have had a common problem with the engine popping spark plugs but if you can get an extended warranty with your purchase you should be ok with that.
Just be sure that you investigate the vehicles history as much as possible before you purchase it.
(I am not an expert) Mine is not a 2000 but a 1997 expedition. I've owned it for 2 years and have put 20,000 miles since I got it. It now has 82,000 miles and the following are the only problems I have had: The 10 disk CD changer only works on some of the tracks, the driver's side window got unglued from the power window mechanism when my wife tried lowering the window when it was icy, there is a squeaky noise when I turn the steering either way, front stabilizer bolts broke off (replaced them with grade 8 bolts from a local hardware store and is stronger than factory), plugs and wires had to be replaced. I get 16 MPG on the highway and 12 in the city. For a 7 year old truck, it still is very reliable and we love it.
$12000 with 95000 miles does not sound that bad if the thing was taken care of. I would check the maintenance record and get an extended warranty as the guy before me stated.
Thanks for the replys and help...it sounds like it's a pretty reliable vehicle. After test driving it for about 30 miles, it started missing. He's going to fix that problem Monday, and then he's going to let us know if we can get it or not.
Was the engine light on when it was missing? This happened to mine not too long ago and my buddy hooked it up to an engine analyzer. My number 3 spark plug wire was the problem. I changed all the plugs and the wires and it has been running great since then.
If it's a 5.4 there are no plug wires just individual coils for each cylinder. The coil sets on top of the spark plugs. Chances are they will replace that coil. I had my Expy when there was 34K on the odometer and now I have 65k. I tow with this pretty much every weekend (about 40 weekends a year). The only thing that went out is the rear wiper. That's pretty much it, just make sure a good fluid change is in order, (Tranny, Rear, Engine, Coolant) just to make sure.
Yea, it's the 2WD version with the 5.4. Chances are, we aren't going to get it. Christmas took a big toll on our Credit Card and I think we are going to pay that all the way off instead. Thanks anyways guys!
I have this same vehicle and have been pretty pleased with it so for. It did have to have the IAC replaced at about 70000 miles. Just recently the radio display has gone out for good, the rear door childlocks have a mind of their own and the tranny has started a weird pulsing feeling when climbing a hill. We were offered $11000 tradein about 2 weeks ago it has 83000miles on it and we gave close to 22000 for it a year and a half ago. Good luck.
I bought our 2000 EB with 90K on it a year ago. It has 105K now. Just about every problem we have had are stuff that is very typical for the breed: 1) Replaced IAC valve due to uneven idle, 2) replaced upper control arms due to bad ball joints, 3) replaced LLS pump due to noise, and 4) replaced rear wiper motor due to motor inop. Fortunately all of these things were replaced under the ESP 100K mile warranty that came with the purchase. I put new tires and new shocks on it as well as a tune-up (spark plugs, PCV, AF, FF). Even with 105K on the clock, this truck is very solid and rattle-free and drives excellent. I am very happy with it.
I've got a 2000 EB 4WD, with 105,000 miles on it. My total list of problems is:
- radio display out (very common problem) - haven't bothered to try the "resolder the display connections" fix yet.
- rear wiper doesn't work until you walk back to it and nudge it a little. This is another very common problem. (I actually replaced the motor once, but unfortunately replaced it with a rebuilt motor that suffers from the same problem. Need to re-do it some time.)
- the spring fell off the back of the dashboard's pop-out cup-holder/ash try. (fixed it by screwing the spring back on)
- ABS sensor on rear differential failed (replaced myself using forum guidance)
- alternator failed a few thousand miles ago. (replaced myself using forum guidance)
That's it. I need to replace the plugs sometime, but the car runs great, and gets the same mpg as it always has, so no rush for now. (16-17 mpg in pure highway driving, 12-13 in city driving, 14-15 for my average usage).
My original Goodyear Wrangler RTS's lasted 60k miles, but were cupped and vibrating a bit for the last 5-10k. The current tires are Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revos, which I am totally happy with. At 45K miles they still have a reasonable amount of useful tread left. They may not make it quite to 60k (I'm guessing more like 55k), but they have stayed smooth, quiet, and with very good driving characteristics so far.)
Other than the gas mileage being bad (as with any large SUV), I've been pretty happy.
We've had our since new in 2000 and it only has 54k on it, my wife drove it and garaged it for first three years or so, now I drive it. Great truck so far. I've had similar problems, and only one big repair. Replace IAC valve myself (easy). Changed the transaxle fluid to synthetic at about 30k to remove a slight groan. Big repair was the right rear axle seal was starting to go on it, slight leak, leaked on parking brake - replacement was $1200. Also replaced the steering column multi function switch CONNECTOR for about $250. Normal maintenance, flushed out trans twice so far, LOFs every 3k. Just replaced tires couple months ago. Other than that, it tows great and has been good so far.
- the spring fell off the back of the dashboard's pop-out cup-holder/ash try. (fixed it by screwing the spring back on)
Sorry to highjack this thread. I have the same problem. I looked at it a little but couldn't see the spring or where it goes. Can you post some more info on how you were able to get the spring back on? Appreciate it, thanks.
Here's my two cents. I purchased a 2001 E/B brand new. I replaced the IAC , replaced the front pads only at 50k, flushed the radiator at 60k and flushed the tranny at 40k. I totaled the vehicle on August 10th of this year and it had 84,000 miles on it at the time. NOTHING broke during my ownership. I put new shocks on at 75k just because I thought it would help but the change was not worth the money I spent on it. The truck ramined tight as a drum on until it's untimely death this month. I did replace the General POS tires at 40k also...
Geo!
By the way, the liable insurance company settled with me (other driver ran a red light)and I was quite suprised. With all the features on the truck and with 84,000 miles they still gave me $17,000.00 for the truck! I actually was able to pay off Ford Motor Credit and still have $3500.00 left at the end of the day.
