I have a 2003 F250 V10 with around 20,000 miles. It was the first cold morning here (around 20 degrees) and when I went to start my truck I heard a strange intermittent sound for about 30 seconds. The only way I can describe it is like someone shaking a long piece of aluminum foil. Does anyone have any idea what this might be.

Happy Holidays!
Your description doesn't sound like piston slap, or valve train noise. It sounds like the converter shield, or maybe a muffler/heat shield. Exhaust flutter happens at 2,000-ish rpm while driving. My guess though is the torque converter shield plate, or a heat shield. Good luck, Ken
I second Ken's comment about it being one of many shields on the truck. Mine makes the same noise but I'm too lazy to crawl under and figure out which one it is.
It was an unusual sound and went away very quickly. It didn't sound like lifter noise or pinging. I'll check the heat/torque converter shields. Thanks for the advise.
I have that same sound. It is not the "flutter" caused by the torque converter shield since I took care of that a while back. I completely changed my entire exhaust except for the cat converter. Headers. ypipe, intermediate pipes, muffler, and tailpipe......and the tinny rattly noise is still there. My F-350 dump body with a V10 does the same thing. It is some kind of minor vibration. Nothing serious. Maybe it is the shield on the converter. It could be anything really.
I have a 2002 F-350 V-10 and it made the same sound. Come to find out, it was the converter shield and the other shield that goes around the tranny. I'm not sure what you call it. The dealership fixed mine. I doesn't make the flutter anymore and all they did was put in some double sided foam tape. Didn't cost me anything so problem solved!
The 150 I had before I got my 250 had the same noise. It was a thin strip of metel between the trans and the bell housing. Used a screw driver and bent the end over and the moise was gone.
