-35 Degree Windchill!!!!!!

Woke up this morning to a balmy -15 degree temp with -37 degree ("realfeel")/WindChill, starting to feel a lot like christmas. Sure makes these engines turnover awfully slow. These are the days I'm gald I can drive my old car to work instead of starting my Superduty. If this winters going to continue to be like this I think I'll have to invest in an oil pan heater for the F250. The block heater does alright but the pan heater makes them spin over like its 80 degreees outside and it sure doesn't hurt to use both. heck my car even sounded like a diesel this morning, can't imagine the clatter out of a diesel in these kinda of temps. I'm just guessing that this is just the begining of 0 to -25 degree weather for a while. We've lucked out so far with this being our coldest day of the year. Anyone else out there have some nice balmy weather like we have up here in ND. Also has anyone ever had a pan heater burn there oil, Don't want that to happen if I decide to install one.

Merry Xmass to everyone.

Get the most cracking amps for your battery and a block heater is all you will ever need. It got -15 last week.

It's not just making it start but more so making it easier on them. I've never had a vehical not start for me. even last year when it got down to -30 degrees temp wise my old 89' olds cutlass supreme with 160,000 miles still started. It sounded like he!! but she started. If you have never lived in cold weather it's the cold start that kills engines. Oil gets pretty thick at -temps and doesn't flow real well if ya know what I mean. This is why I use at the very least synthetic blended oils and perfer full synthetic.

I was born and raised in Duluth MN so I know where you are coming from, I also spent 2 years in Sault Ste Marie when I was in the service, I hate the cold and snow, my next move will be farther South. ( I'm in NE right now)
And when its cold motors and everything else make some strange noises, and when I was in Duluth we lived by tank heaters on timers and Heat for the gas tanks.

So, does anyone know how to answer to SLE's question about the oil pan heater??? Is it bad for the oil? Seems that it might be nice to have good flowing oil on cold mornings but on the other hand, I would hate to comprimise its effectiveness in protection.

I have used them on all my vehicles and I have not had a problem. Oil pan heater pads are as common as oil pans around here, as well as people using transmission pan heater pads, battery heating pads/blankets, and engine block heaters. I have not heard of anyone burning their oil, etc. during the use of these, but they are only used when it's cold (below zero) and are ususally plugged into a timer on your house. I guess during "warm" weather and being constantly on..who knows.

Tonight
Snow diminishing after midnight. Snow accumulation 1 to 2 inches. Lows 10 to 20 below. Southwest winds 15 to 25 mph. Wind chill to 40 below.

Friday
Partly cloudy. Highs 15 to 20 below. Southwest winds 5 to 15 mph. Wind chill to 45 below.

Friday Night
Partly cloudy. Lows 25 to 30 below. South winds to 10 mph.

Something else to think about??

Sunrise today 10:59am
Sunset today 2:41pm
Length of day 3 hours 42 minutes
Tomorrow we gain 58 seconds of daylight....

Good grief! I used to live in Connecicut and thought that was cold. In your gallery, is that the alaska pipeline ? Im in the shipping business and notice anything that looks like it carries oil, even if its frozen.

So I guess you don't want to visit when it's -50 or so. That is a section of the pipeline just north of Fairbanks, a viewing area for tourists.

have son & daughter living in the North and they still enjoy the cold,, forecast this week here in the Clearwater Florida area is low 60s and high in the mid 70s,,

we love it,,
