The inside of my ciggarrette lighter is pretty rusted and when I try to use an adapter it doesn't work. Would it be a bad connection from the lighter to the adapter because of the rust or would it be wiring trouble? If anyone has any experience with something like this let me know. Also, is it hard to replace the cigarrette lighter?
If it is significantly rusted, then yes, I'd replace it. Rust doesn't conduct electricity too well. There should be some sort of plug on the back of it to disconnect the 12V. If it is not too rusty, I'd take one of those battery terminal cleaners (with the 12v disconnected or the fuse pulled, or you'll be changing the fuse next) with the round brush and stick it in there and see if there's enough metal left underneith the rust to make it work.
Or just go to a junk yard and see if you can find a used one that is in good shape.
Once you take the ash tray out, it should be pretty self explanitory as to how the cigarette light comes out.
Another idea is to go buy one of those cigarette lighters that can bolt under the dash and connect it to 12 volts. They are fairly in-expensive and would probably cost less than a used assembly out of a salvage yard.
if you have a wire wheel for a dremel you could wire wheel it up and clean it, and if you clean the socked i'd remove the fuse because it would spark with a metal wire wheel.
