Jack and Stand ratings

Ok, this seems like kind of a stupid question, but what the heck! I'm looking at getting a floor jack and a set of stands so I can do things like change shocks on my Bronco. I know it's a big ole heavy beast, so I'm wondering if the 2 1/2 ton jack and stands are strong enough to do the job? I would think so, since they really only hold up one end of the truck at a time, but it never hurts to ask!

Thanks all!

BTW, it's like 15 degrees here in louisville right now, and the weather man is predicting 10" to 15" of snow tonight! I'll be in Bronco heaven tomorrow pullin people out of ditches!

Hey that's not a stupid question, it would suck to have that beast fall on your head huh? I use 3 ton stands and a 2 ton jack like you said you'r only lifting 1 end at a time. hope ya'll got the snow be fun to play in

jacks to change shocks? are you using overload shocks?

I would stay away from anything less than a 3 ton jack. the smaller ones have a tendancy to "bend" if you lift the bronco from the differential. i ruined 2 of my 2 ton jacks doing that until I realized the rear end was just too heavy to lift all of it at once...i highly suggest lifting one side at a time

just remember if you have the factory 31" tires, the factory jack stand will barely reach your rear axle (stupid huh?)

Good advice Tylus. Sounds like 3 ton is the way to go.

I was under the impression (mistakenly apparently) that the easiest way to get to the front shocks was to remove the wheel. Sounds like that might not be true however. Anyway, I do want to try doing brake pads when the time comes, so the the stands would come in handy for that!

I have a 2 1/4 or so jack I bought about 18 years ago, and it works fine, although I can feel that it can barely lift the Bronco. The stands I'm using are rated 4 or 5 tons. I still have two 2 ton jacks that were made out of some heavy gauge sheetmetal, but I don't trust those under the Bronco.

Sounds like on this one it is better to err on the side of caution and get a good quality floor jack of at least 3 ton capacity, and a good pair of 3 ton + stands. I'm close to my Bronco, but I don't want to get THAT close!
