It will be much easier, affordable and original looking if you use a manual. Supposedly, ford did make a few automatic 4x4 trucks in 67-72. I've seen and owned alot of these trucks and have never seen a 4x4 truck factory equipped with an automatic tranny. What engine and transmission your truck has would be helpful in determining what your options are. Without that info, I can tell you that you will have to get a tailhousing from a later model automatic 4x4 truck either divorced or mated. If your truck is a shortbox, then mated is a necesity. How do you plan to do the 4x4 conversion? Are you swapping to a 4x4 f100 frame or fabricating your own front suspension?

For the 4x4 conversion on my 69 F-250, I am replacing the whole drivetrain with newer pieces, with a c6 auto and an NP208 case, or an NV241HD if I can find one. There are at least two crossmembers that will have to be removed and relocated, plus the one under the engine. The easiest thing to do is pull the cab off to gain acess to everything, or just put the cab on a 4x4 frame.
Trucks from this era had divorced transfer cases, but with parts readily available today, it doesn't make much sense to add that much length to a drivetrain, not to mention the added pair of u-joints.

it depends on what you wantif you want ti to appear stock then you will want a one speed transfer case and it will bolt to the back of your c-6 tranny if you want a 2 speed case than all you need to do is fnd a truck preferabbly a 73-79 and get the transfer case and drivelines out of it bet the crosmember if you can and it all sould easily mount inot your truck.
