$100 460 fenderwell headers

And I save 400 bucks from having to buy them from L&L! While they may not be the prettiest, the do take the exhaust and dump it right ouside the frame rails. Got me a sheet of 1/4" steel, 2 180 degree 3" mandrel bends from Summit, and 4 90 degree angles from a local muffler shop. Used the gasket as a pattern of how to drill the holes for the flanges. Total time, about 15 hours, but I could probably do it again in 8. I made 2 different designs, but the both seem to work ok. Once these start leaking (and I know they will, especially with just 1/4" flanges), I'll make new ones. Used 1 7/8" tubing. While they may not help performance, at least the heat will be going away from the tranny, plus I can look at them and be proud of what I did. Everyone but my dad that I told said 'heh, good luck'. I'll get pics tonight and get them posted. If you have access to a welder, a drill press, and a torch, these are certainly possible and a GREAT way to spend some time during the cold winter evenings!

I saw some guy on another forum that took some $100 dollar headers for a van, cut up the tubes and re welded them to make fenderwell exit headers for his 4x4. I can't remember the link, but it was pretty cool. Good luck with your headers!

I can't wait to see how they turned out. I don't know that I have the patience for fiddly little detail that something like headers needs. Still, it would be fun to play around with some time, especially if I get my TIG torch and can make them all bling.

Actually, welding up your own is often the best way to get the tubes perfectly balanced for the exhaust waves. Good for you, look forward to pics.

I can assume you, there is ABSOLUTELY no balance to my setup. I didn't bother to totally gasket match the flanges to the gasket hole or really do all the finishing touches; like I said, akk I wanted was to get the gases away from inside the vehicle. I had to make a couple nasty looking booger-esqe fills where the pipes didn't quite match up, but on my next set, I'll do a better job. This was mainly just a quick-and-dirty thrown together kinda thing, but I'm still proud of it. I actually got quite a few good welds going on for em. Ever since I got away from flux-core MIG and got hooked on the bottle, I'm never gonna go back. If I can keep up my progress, I may net even bother learning how to TIG weld, but I'd still like to weld beer cans together. I'll post pics at approximately 6 pm central time, so keep your eyes on here around then.

Alright, got the pic's loaded.

BTW, the flange thickness is 1/4" and the tubes are all 1 7/8". I think that 3/8" is gonna be my next flange attempt. I need to make 4-lug to 5-lug adapters anyhow, so I'll just use 3/8" for that too.

I found them. The links opened the create gallery page. Pics are in gallery> things I'm proud of.

You have a lotta patience! I think I'd be sawzalling some sheet metal for straight tubes.

It really didn't take all that long. A few hours a night and a full day and a half of messing around they bolted right up.
