Need some help here. My resto F3 has original flathead V8, and each plug is fitted with some kind of bushing which spaces the plug away from the head some 3/4" of an inch or so and looks in its interior almost like a precombustion chamber in an old diesel design. All eight of the cylinders are fitted with these, along with original-style and sized plugs and all threads look fine, so I don't believe they're there to fix boogered threads in the head. My suspicion is that these are some sort of "snake oil" devices sold to improve performance, gas mileage, or the stock market.
You hit it on the head, those are Anti-Fouling Adapters. They still sell them at Pep Boys, and honestly, they work great if you've got an oil burner. They don't seem to hurt performance significantly, either, at least on OHV engines I've used them on.
Honestly, this engine has not yet run for me, so I don't know if it's an oil burner or not. I'm about to the point of firing it up, so I'll find out pretty quickly. It sure has plenty of oil and dirt caked on the outside! Hello, Pressure Wash!
