Engine swap question.
I have an '88 Ranger with a 2.0L. Truck has 70K. Engine has 30K. I've blown two engines in this thing now. I keep punching a hole in the number 3 piston. Anyway I'm fed up with it and looking to get rid of it. I've checked boneyards around here, (Chicago) and the best price I can get on an engine is $500 for a 2.3L. From the info I've been able to gather, It'll drop in without a problem. Only problem I have is spending $500 on an engine with 90K miles on it. My question is how difficult would it be to drop in a 2.8L V-6? I can pick up a long block with 9K miles on it for $500 (carbureteor to oil pan). From what I can gather the 2.8 was used in rangers in the early/mid-eighties (171 c.i.?) I've got a carb on my 2.0 - no F.I. - and I know I'd have to change motor mounts. I am concerned about whether the five-speed manual will bolt up, and how much of the wiring harness do I need to modify to get it to run. If I can get a 6 cylinder in it fairly easily, I might just keep it for a while. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
