Engine/Tranny Match-Up!
Hey guys,
I have a '88 Ranger 2.0L 2WD.
I'd like to drop in a '84 2.8L, but I don't know if it will match my current 5-speed tranny.
The 2.8L is in a 4WD.
Short of pulling it and dropping it in to see, where can I get info to see if the 2.8 can use my current 5-speed?

i would check with a local salvage yard, they should be able to tell you if both engines would use the same transmission. is the 2.8 in good shape? i drove a bronco II once with a 2.8 and though it was a rather doggy motor, my '88 had a 2.3 4 cyl that felt more like a V-6 than the 2.8 did. good luck with your project. My 2.0 has a pretty bad Head Gasket Leak, and with the work involved, I figured I'd rather switch up to the 2.8, which is being donated!
I didn't want to go for the 2.3 or the 2.9 because that would mean switching to fuel injection and more computers.
All in all, I hope the 2.8 will just run as good as my illing 2.0
