Temperature on '88 7.3

I have a 1988 F350 with a 7.3 and a Banks turbo. It's been about 25 to 30 degrees out. I've noticed that the factory guages indicate temperature (not egt) is about half of normal. Also, oil pressure is about half of normal. Normal for this truck in the summer is right on the 'N' in Normal. Is the current temp and pressure bad? Should I consider putting a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator to warm it up a bit?

I've got the same Year truck- F350 7.3 5-speed 4X4. No turbo. My temp in winter ranges from below the "n" by about 2 needles to just above the "n". Oil pressure runs between the "m" and "r" . The oil pressure stays pretty constant through the seasons. Hope this helps.

At those temps there should be no need for cardboard, check your fan to see if it is operating at full air flow continually (locked up). It should not, it should only come in when temps are well above the normal engine temps and should normally just tick over until needed. If you can borrow/find a point and shoot temp guage.........

Diesel engine coolant temperature at the top of the radiator where hose attaches after high rpm or under load condition for 20 minutes should be (195-237*F) 91-114*C
Standard cautions when handleing hot engine/coolant apply, nice time to have a temperature reading point and shoot tool.

Thanks for the info. The truck has been plugged in all night. I'll try it later when it's preheated to see if that makes a difference. I'm hoping just letting it warm up more will make a difference. Tomorrow is supposed to be near 0 degrees F.

Be careful if you have an automatic trans. If you cover the radiator you are covering the trans cooler too. Mine is dead center in front of the radiator.

I believe there is a dash gage voltage regulator, you may want to check into that since you have more than one gage reading low.

Is the heater/defroster working OK?

I don't trust the stock oil pressure gage, and installed a mechanical one.

The stock guages are not worth having.
What they read compared to a mechanical guage is really funny to watch.

They sometimes give you an entirely false sence of security.
One day my mechanical will read 5 pounds at idle, the dash guage is reading on the l of normal. The next day my mechanical is reading 40 pounds at 2000 RPM and the dash guage is barely up to the L below normal.

JMTCW
Just my two cents worth

My mechanical oil pressure gage came with a bracket that I mounuted under the dash, it's a bit low, but really no problem. You can mount them anywhere you can see them.

Red face Placement of Gauges

I have been contimplating the installation of several new more inproved Gauges ever since my trans burned up from excesive heat, had I seen the tempreture rising I could have stoped and let it cool. But no these trucks don't come with trans temp gauges...

Anyway I have woundered where to install them so they look proper. A windshield post mount would be right sweet But no they don't make that Item for an 88

It's funny how the Auto market sometimes skips years. andf I always seem to be attracted to those years of vehicles. (57, 62, 88)

awwww well better days we are soon to embark
