Has anyone tried these products being advertised that increase horsepower and milage (many I know)! These go by a number of different names i.e. vortex valve, turbinator, tornado, etc.... basically they can be placed over your carb or in your air intake for efi vehicles. Anyway they can claim anything but havent talked to anyone who has really tried them. Just curious!
They are junk, there are many threads on them here. If that kind of stuff worked the OEM's would put it in. Don't believe the testimonials and the dyno. It is easy to drop a cylinder during the before test and hook it back up for the after test.
If you really want to save gas buy an inexpensive vacuum gage and hook it up so you can see it while you are driving.
Vehicles are manufactured to get the best mpg they can get.
That ain't always true. They have to meet sound, emission, and other stuff that effect mileage. The air silencers on Regal GS and GTP intakes is restrictive (Eaton blowers are loud) and putting an hi flow intake on these is win win.
The gubmint has NEVER found the "milage saver" devices to work. Google is great, and you probably can dig up the gubmint studies proving my aforementioned point.
As for vehicles being made for best eficiency....heck, my Ranger's 2.3L would get better mileage on 10.0:1 compression than on factory 9.2:1, but they keep to a budget.
They are a waste of money. I seen studys about them and using the tornado some people seen worst milage or the same. I would think that thing would restrict air flow somewhat having it in your filter or intake.
These things have been around forever. In the pre-emissions days, there were devices that just caused a metered vacuum leak and leaned out the mixture a little. They were probably the only ones that ever "worked" for increasing mpg. My favorite is the magnet that you attach to the fuel line to "align" the gasoline molecules.

If they worked, car companies would use/lincene them as OEM equipment to help meet CAFE.
for the most part, keep a fresh air filter in for good airflow, good plugs/wires and the tires pumped up all the way. that will help alot. the replacement air filter systems look like a good idea but cost alot. you could just buy the filter and make your own tube out of pvc. seen one done at rangerstation, i think.
danger_ranger_dude how about some nice fragrance for your exhaust instead?
Go to Jegs.com and look for Power Plus Fuel Additives. It's available in lots of different scents.

Only for alky-engines. Sorry bro.
Your ranger didn't come with 10.0 compression because that would most certainly require premium fuel. The cost difference when looking at the scale of production that Ford sees and the many different ways to increase compression means it was a non-cost-induced choice. It is simply so that the engine doesn't ping to death when Joe-Shmoe drives to Po-Dunk in the backwoods and loads up on the 2 months old 86 octane junk they're selling. This is the primary reason that chips/programmers work, making it so that the engine will die on such gas, but perform GREAT with the Techron or V-Power premium 92 octane down the street =).
If you want better mileage, send me the money and I'll push your truck with it in neutral. It'll get better mileage!
The scary thing is if some idiot got a hold of the stuff and decided to sit and smell the airfreshener, man that carbon monoxide smells awesome!! Yeah a big hill is awesome way to increase your mpg, or even better gat up behind a semi and tie a rope to it. Im sure the truck driver wouldnt mind!!
When I came across that stuff, it said that it was alcohol engines only. It actually says somewhere its dual rated? I'd assume that it would/should have some effect in gasoline as well, but I thought in my reading that it was designed solely for alky's.
