1996 F-250 5.8 Auto 4x4 western minute mount plow.
I just got this truck just before winter, came with the plow installed. Started and ran all winter with out any issues. Once when it was well below Zero it did not start, I let it warm up outside came back a few days later and started right up. When I was out plowing one night the bearings went on the idler puller on top of the engine, and litteraly smoked that pulley. Shortly after that the batt light came on but still started every time after that.
I took the plow off it, drove it a couple of times no issues. Parked it in my drive way went out next day and nothing, turn the key I get a single click that it is. I have all power everything works etc. I put the batt charger on it set to 200 amp start and nada. turned it to normal charge let it run for several hours came back still single click. In looking over the truck I notcied the main batt cable from batt to starter had corroded and was dangling under the truck. so I replaced that from batt to starter all new cable. Then I noticed the one from batt to solenoid was bad so I replaced that one, when I did I twisted the copper stud off the solenoid so I replaced that. Hooked everything up turned the key...single click and nada. put the charger on it and tried again...still nada.
As I am typing this I am running through all the lines in my mind, and the thing 16 ga ? wire that runs to the solenoid in the thick insulated Y is attached to the solenoid but I dont remember seeing where it attached to the Batt On the new batt cable there is a 16 ga (not sure what gauge the thin wire is) that comes off the pos terminal that I couldn't find a matching wire to connect it to. So I am assuming that may be the problem, if not. then have to move on down to the starter.
get a hammer and have someone try to start it while you crawl under the truck and tap the starter. if this is the case you might need to have it tested may be going bad you might need to run a ground wire to the mounting bolt on the solinoid
i just went throu this with my track last weekend. save your self some time and pull it out. bring it in and get it tested. sounds like its done if you ask me.
oh i forgot about that there is an update on those starters slide under the truck and wiggle the spade wire and check to see if it will start better then that just upgrade this with an eyelet on the bolt
