my 87 f250 4x4 manual locking hubs 4-spd manual is all messed up, driving down the road in normal conditions 3rd and 4th gear keep clunking at random, every time it clunks it feels like i just ran over a small animal, today i had it in 4x4 and it was more intence it felt like the tranny was going to fall off the truck, every time the truck bucked it tossed me around, i mean my but came off the seat a few times, i was about 45 miles away from home and to my suprise the truck made it, this has been going on for a few weeks now, i only drive it when i need to, what the hell is wrong with it, i know it's not the fuel (had all three pumps replaced and new fuel lines) is the tranny trash ?
Ouch, sounds like something going bad wrong in that tranfer case. Was in a friends Dodge and his acted like that but only when he had it in 4wd. Could also be in the differentials or even the trans but with it acting worse in 4wd that's where I'd check first. Good luck cause that isn't something that is easy to check. Check the fluid for metal if ya can.
na the front axel is fine and i had both front axel joints and the drive shaft joint replaced about 2-3 months ago, i checked the tranny and it was clean no mettal, it feels like it is slipping in and out of gear, is that possible with a manual trans ?

yes, if the transfer case is starting to fail, I have seen one like this before, my cousin had it and it had a bad shift fork and wouldent fully go into four high or two high, it eventually chewed it all apart and he had to re-build the transfer case. hows you dif. levels, are they up to par?? the front one could be out, or very low and causing a bearing to bind or something?
Had the same thing happen in an older jeep truck of mine. In my case it was the spider gears in the rear diff giving up. It started acting like a solid spool (hopping around turns, bucking), then it would give up completely (wouldn't turn the wheels), then after rolling a few feet from the momentum it would grab again. Then after about 10 miles it just finally poped and I replaced the spider gears and all is fine.
found out what it is two of the bolts connecting the t case to the transmition is missing, had it replaced but now the tranny is making some god awfull noises i swear it's a never ending battle
If so, then the sound you heard was the driveline bind being released. The crunchy noises would be the parts being damaged by driveline binding from using 4wd on pavement.
