I own a red 1998 Ranger SC, 4.0L, 3.55 gears, 5 speed auto, 5000lb tow pkg., color-keyed Brahma camper shell. Has 150,000 miles on it now, nothing but Mobil1 oil and filter. Best tranny I've ever seen on a Ford. I towed a 5000lb boat/trailer for two years and tranny is still strong. Mobil1 ATF too.
I bought a Dodge 3500CTD to pull the boat with and kept the Ranger for my daily driver. I wanted an F250 PSD, but the dealer offered me a deal I couldn't pass up.
If you don't mind me getting a little technical right off the bat, your Ranger tranny, the 5R55E, calls for Mercon V ATF. Mobil1 ATF is not Mercon V rated. Just an FYI.
FWIW, I use M1 ATF in my '97 Taurus tranny (AX4S) which calls for regular Mercon, so don't think I'm just bashing the product.
Sounds like a sweet little Ranger. Hope it has many good miles to come. Sorry to hear about that Dodge though...
It did NOT like that boat back there. Truck pulled it fine, except that the 4.0 just doesn't have enough power to move that much weight safely. Brakes were very weak with it too. And even with Monroe SensaTrac shocks, it dropped the rear about 4". The frame-mounted hitch underneath the bumper just added to that problem. I had to buy a 12" drop hitch and turn it upside down so the trailer would tow level.
I looked for a PSD, but he didn't have what I wanted. I bought the Dodge for $8000 under sticker, no money down, no trade-in. Only had 23,000 miles on it. Helluva deal any way you look at it. This is the first Dodge truck I've ever owned.
I also own a 1995 Aerostar LWB van and a 1995 Merc Gran Marquis. I've owned Fords all my life, never owned a Chevy. Used to own a 1987 F250SC 6.9 Diesel. Great truck, had Captains' Chairs and a kickazz stereo system. I put a big kicker box on the back seat with 2 12" woofers and a box of midrange speakers under the back seat. Awesome sounds!!!
