Can anyone please answer this question? what do you have to do to get a 300 from a 2wd into a 4wd f-250? You see I had my oil changed at an oil change place & they put to much oil in & it caused my engine to not run so good. I have no proof other than it did not run right ater the oil change. So, I asked around & was told that any 300 would fit in nicely. So I bought a use 300 from a junk yard & took it to a garage to have the swap done & the mech called me & said that the oil pan will not allow the swap to be done. He states that the new engine is from a 2wd & I have a 4wd. He said the oil dip stick in the 2wd goes into the block & the dip stick to the 4wd goes into the pan. I have no idea... Please Help. I think your problem is as simple as a oil pan change and plug the dip stick hole in the block. This shouldn't be a big deal. That's exactly what's in my truck now. My motor has a the dip stick hole in the block with a pan that also has a dip stick tube. I just plugged the hole in the block with a bolt with telfon tape on the threads. I think whats happening here is that if a mechanics going to stand behind their work, they would like for it to be right. This doesn't mean that doing this would not be ok. Maybe you just have to give him the ok to do this. JMHO Drk2
Thanks for the quick reply. I called the mech & he states that the oil pan from the engine that is in the truck now is also longer than the oil pan on the new engine. The Truck is an '83 f-250 with a '77 engine from a 4x4 & the new engine is from a '84 f-150 2wd. He said I need to find either another engine or find the right oil pan. Can anyone help? Thanks.
He's probably talking about the sump is in the rear rather than the front. Finding an oil pan is the easy part but understanding what he means about it being to long is the question. A 300I6 is the same in total length from year to year, the only difference is in the sump placement. I would just replace the pan with the pan from the motor there pulling out of the truck. Drk2
I went ahead & bought a new oil pan ($176.28) & took it to the mech. We looked at the pan that is on the new engine & they look to be the same pan! I am very disappointed with him. He never even took the engine out of the truck, let alone see if the new engine would actually fit in the truck. He was just going by what another mech was telling him & not checking it out for himself. Meanwhile he has had the truck since last thursday doing nothing to it but calling me daily telling me he can not swap them. Anyhow, if it wasn't for your input I would've just hung it up. I would have thought he could simply unbolt the pan from one motor to the other, I've done this with small blocks and no problems, just had the extra dipstick. I get aggravated myself with those that tell me it can't be done, but don't know why, just that it can't. My experience has been that if it is the same motor, it will swap, just may take a little more time and effort.
All 80-96 trucks use the same oil pan on the same displacement engine, no matter if it's 2wd or 4wd. They use the same engine crossmember and mounts in both applications.
Thank you all for the info! I pulled it out of there & took it to another garage. The new place said it would be no problem, I'll have it back Tuesday or Wednesday. That's not bad since they'll be off for Christmas. I wish I would've taken to these guys right off the bat, that way I wouldn't have waited a week while not getting anything done.
