I have a 97 expy with 210k on it. Started to develope a vibration particularly when turning to the right under acceleration. generaly from a standing start like turning right at a stop sign? Is this a sure sign of front drive axles? If so do i change both while at it? Never been changed before? Thanks everyone
Could be a bad CV joint on one of the front axles. Could be a sign of an issue with the limited slip rear differential if your Expy is so equipped. Don't know if your truck has a limited slip rear differential? Check the vehicle certification label found on the driver's door. Look for a two digit code under the word "AXLE" If the code starts with the letter "H", the rear differential is equipped with a limited slip system. If the first digit is the number "1", it's not.
Paul thanks for info, pretty surenot an issue with rear end, feel vibrationin sterrting wheel and definatley feels as if its up front, Has traler tow and limited slip differential. Any other takers on if its the front axles?
Don't rule out the rear LS. Under acceleration, the driveline is locked together (for the most part) so any vibrations in the rear axle would be transmitted through the driveshaft, transfercase, transmission, engine and into the motor mounts. And what is right near the motor mounts? The steering box. Take it to a shop for a free estimate and get their opinion on it.
If you really want to see if it is the front end, you'll have to do a lot of digging. To make a long, long story short, with the front halfshaft in your hand, the CV should operate freely without binding or much effort. If not, be prepared to drop some dough on an expensive part.
