o.k. I went to the local stereo shop and they tested the woofer and it is bad, they dont have and there are no aftermarket manufactures making a replacement for it.
I dont want to purchase from ford directly ($90.00) so I am looking for suggestions.
I have a '98 Eddie Bauer and the dealer told me the replacement speaker came as an assembly only. This assembly included the speaker and amplifier mounted in the plastic housing for the bargain price of....$278.00. I went down to the local flea market and bought a good quality after market 8" sub-woofer. The depth of the new speaker required the cutting away of the rear portion of the plastic housing to allow room for the speaker and the 8 screws that mount the speaker on the front of the housing were sufficient for support of the speaker. The sound is much richer bass and the cost of the speaker was like $40.00. There are many different brands of 8" sub-woofers although you may have to order that particular size, and most have the same eight screw holes on the face of the speaker as the O.E.M. speaker.
thanks steve, unfortunatly for me the 97s and older had a 6.5in speaker so making the 8in fit would require a bit more modifcation than i am willing to perform.
anyone know where i can get the 6.5 besides the dealer?
thanks
I have a '91 EB Explorer with a working subwoofer and a '97 Mountaineer with a nonworking subwoofer. I think I can switch the two but I can't figure out how to remove the subwoofer cover in the rear cargo area on the passenger side. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!
not necessary to remove the whole panel, just pry off the mesh screen and there are four screws under the foam ring. i found a woofer from etronics on the web for $10.00 plus shipping and it works perfect!
Yea you can pry it off but its gonna break those connectors not meant to be pryed off. But its your vehical might as well just duct tape it back on while your at it.
