My 88 4cyl fuel injected Ranger has been losing power and dying lately (it has been very hot in our area). This typically occurs after making three or four short trips (5 - 10 miles) with a five or ten minute stop in between each trip. Then as I am travelling, the engine starts to lose power and cuts out completely. After cooling off for about 30 minutes the truck will then go again. I recently had the fuel pump (on the frame under the driver) replaced by a mechanic hoping that would solve the problem - without any luck. I have had the truck for about 5 years and haven't had this problem until now. Any ideas about what could be causing the problem would be greatly appreciated.
Check to see if any fuel lines are collapsing or maybe if you had exhaust work done on it lately it could be running too close to the fuel line. My truck would only run when it was cool and it ended up being the module in the dist. My truck usually just died though(no loss of power). Hope this helps.

I agree with Jeff. It sounds like a classic example of the module in the dist. needing to be replaced. By the time you can get it in for service, it has cooled down and will run fine. Yours is one of the Fords which is supposed to be recalled to have that replaced. But I wouldn't wait for the recall, get the thing replaced, and see if there's somewhere else it can be mounted, away from all the heat of the engine. That's what's causing it to malfunction.
