1970 F250, replaced the distributor a year ago. It has run fine since till yesterday. I hadn't driven it in 4 weeks. Warmed it up and drove it around the block. Let it sit for an hour, restarted it and it ran for 15secs and quit.
The battery is 4mos old. I replaced the coil yesterday, and purchased new cap/rotor this afternoon. I just wonder if the condenser has gone south.
It cranks okay, and has 1/4 tank of gas right now. Your suggestions are
appreciated, I'm ready to throw in the towel!
Replace the condenser. Is there spark at the plugs? Put a screwdriver in the plug wire and crank it, holding or laying the screwdriver where it can arc to the block.
Then if you have spark, I'd make sure you are getting gas to the carb. Could be the filter or the fuel pump. Timing could be an issue if it backfired and then died, but I'd check the easiest and cheapest pieces first.
If i were you, id check the ignition module box, or equivilent thereof that you have. The other day, i was driving the 77, and it quit. No good reason for it, but it just died. A month or so before when i was takin it to town, it did the same thing. However, by the time i got back to pull it home, it started like a champ. Brought it home and toyed with it, and went to test drive it, and didnt get to the end of the block, and it quit. Pushed it back home, and ordered the "brain box" for it. Both 351s we had in that pickup did it. Now,with the new one in, it runs good, and hasnt quit yet. Problem solved. It sounds like that could be your problem too.
well i suppose it would help if i gave you some pointers on how to test it. Sometimes they start again, and sometimes they dont. Anyway, if that is the problem, either get someone to help you, or if you have a push button starter switch that you can hook up, that helps. But get a test light, and check the spark while your turning it over. Before i had everything hooked up to test it, i went inside and turned it over one more time and it took off. But if it has spark sometimes or not at all, that could be the problem. If you can see the little grommet where the wires go into the box (providing its not painted over) its a certain color. Blue and yellow colored ones were notorious for going out. Hope this helps, because ive typed too much for it to not help, haha.
