Help needed with 92 merc trans

I have a 92 merc sable 3.0L V6 with I believe ax4s trans. The car will barely go into drive. I am considering rebuilding the trans myself. I have a couple questions.
Is there an inexpensive code reader for a 92?
What is the best manual for rebuilding the trans?
What is the best source for trans parts?

Any suggestions how to start?

Yes, any cheap code reader will work on a '92.

Helm, Inc, produces the factory manuals. They are the best by far, IMHO. Go to Helm

Get the car on a hoist, support the engine from above, remove the subframe and exhaust, then the transmission will come out from the bottom.

Helm sells the factory manuals, so they are the best there are, IMHO. I can't tell if it is enough for a non-mechanic unless I see that non-mechanic in action.

I will tell you that getting the transmission out of a Sable is NOT for the faint hearted. It's quite a job.
