I have a 1977 Ford F-150 custom, with a windsor 351, and i am wondering is it possible to change out my automatic and put in a manual. I have the c-6 transmission in thier now.The 17 bolts on the pan. If anyone could tell me what manual transmission would bolt up i would greatly appreciate it.
Almost any manual tranny can be mated with the proper bell housing to fit your Windsor. Your headaches are going to be getting all the little pieces-parts to do the swap, and modifying what's on your truck now to successfully complete the swap. Examples: correct flywheel, cutting floor for shifter (after removing seat and floor covering), pedal parts and associated linkage, cross member, possible altering drive shaft length, the list goes on and on. If you are set on doing this, by far the easiest way to accomplish it is to find a donor/parts truck with everything in tact that you need and park it beside the one you are modifying. Otherwise you'll spend more time on the road hunting parts than working on the project.
if you are sure its a windsor, then any truck with a 300-6 or 302 will have all the parts you need. the C-6 should be worth something to someone being a smallblock C-6,
however if you have a 351m you have the bellhousing pattern of a 460. a 351m/400/460 truck will have the parts you need.
as far as I know, ford didnt install the 351w into trucks until 1980.
I appreciate the quik response you guys have been great help. And after long thought i think im just gonna go with another c-6 trani.I found one at the local junk yard for $250.00. Just hope this one lasts.
I'd second the motion on staying with the C6. I plan on buying a video which guides you thru the rebuild process, and do mine myself. My tranny is still good but I have another one to rebuild, to go in later. That might be something for you to think about. Just pickup a C6 for cheap which is complete that just needs rebuilt or use yours. Pick up a good rebuild kit and a new torque converter. It might save you a lot of down time and frustration with a boneyard tranny. "Just a thought."
Howdy.... I have not seen the video, so I can't really comment on it, but let me recommend a very well written Haynes "Techbook" titled Ford automatic transmission overhaul. It's part number 10355.
I swear by this book and found it to to be very clear on everything. This and a good torque wrench plus a fair amount of patience you should be able to do a very good job.
I also have the Ford factory manual which covers the C-6. So if/when you get to the point of rebuilding, e-mail me and I can copy the factory manual pages for you.
A combination of the video and a quality manual will help a "first timer" do an excellent rebuild that you will be proud of. The C6 is one of the builder friendliest tranny's to work on. I located a rebuildable core before the one in my truck finally died, rebuilt it, and when the one in use toasted took a long Saturday and swapped them out. That afforded me the luxury of "beefing" up the replacement tranny as I was building it. Let me know if you want some links to some of the avaliable tried and true build ups. I have a few links stored that are extremely informative.
Ya that would be helpful I went and picked up another c-6 and droped the old one last night, so when I put in the new one in I plan on rebuilding and storing the older one.So any helpful info on that would be much appreciated.
Remember to get a C6 from behind a similar engine so the valve body shift points are correct. I have heard there are differences in the applications.
I have a C6 rebuild vieo from Badshoe Productions, by a Ford Master Mechanic. It is very good and it helps to see someone actually do something rather than just look at some still picture or diagram. http://pages.prodigy.net/kennethl6/
I also have the Haynes book #10355, lot's of info but the video is nice.
I also have an old Motor's automatic transmission book (2.5" thick) that has great diagrams.
hdgapeach, Please post those links for all of us.
There is also some great info in the Transmission forum here on the C6.
OK, I'm starting to run across some of the tranny links. As I locate 'em I'll add 'em on here. Be patient, I don't exactly have them organized like I should and I am litterally having to go to each site and make sure of why I "favoritized" the link in the first place. Maybe this will be a good excuse to get more organized with what I save and categorize better.
This first link has some good FAQ's answered as well as a good source for a video made by a 30 year master tech on Fords. http://pages.prodigy.net/kennethl6/
This is a link to the build that I did to the tranny in my truck. Plenty satisfied with the results. http://www.4wheeloffroad.com/techarticles/54580/
Don't neglect to read the sidebar articles at the bottom left of the page. They have quite a bit of info that answered a few Q's that I had.
Eastwood sell the popular video that most folks get. The ATSG transmission service manuals are a good investment if you are going to do it yourself. http://www.txchange.com/atsg.htm
if you say so guy because i just changed the housing on it and Im a first timer to ever attempt to do it and damn i f***** it up.
