Stereo Mounting Question

Hey guys!

I replaced my factory AM/FM/CD unit with a new Pioneer DEH-1600 this afternoon. (95 EB Bronco, so it's the Premium Sound System) Everything went great with the harness kit from Circuit City, but my problem is with the mounting of the new unit. The factory unit has a clip on the top of the rear that slides onto a track at the top of the "hole" in the console where the stereo goes. I can't see a way to mount the clip on the new unit, and I'm a bit leary of just letting it sit in there with nothing really holding it in place. Has anyone else installed a Pioneer unit in their Bronco, and how did you mount it?

On my '90 I had to get an adapter plate for the radio to attach to (which cost as much as the wire harness, so I didn't get the wire harness. I figure I don't want to sell my truck anyway )

That factory clip is no longer used when installing an aftermarket radio. The metal sleeve that you put in the dash and slide the new radio into is what holds everything together.

I know that it seems a little strange if it's the first time that you have done this, but I've had three different cd decks in my Bronc, none of them mounted with the clip; none of them so much as skipped a beat.

And as you have already seen, there is no way to put that bracket onto your new radio. So even if you wanted to do it, you couldn't. Just put the radio sleeve in as tight as you can and it will be fine.

dont just let it sit there, the sleve has little tabs and triangles cut into it, bend them down and it will hold the sleve in place you can then slide the stereo in....solid as a rock. I prefer the little trinagles because as you bend them down they will apply pressure to the plastic and make it more solid.

JBronco: You mention a metal sleeve. I don't seem to have one. I pulled out the old head unit, and all that is in ther now is the upper track and a bunch of space. I double checked the old stereo to make sure I didn't "leave anyuthing behind" and it's clean. I really wanted to do this by myself, but if all else fails the Pioneer came with free installation at Circuit City so I can always get them to mount the thing.

Trucky18: You also reference the sleeve, but it sounds like you are talking about the outside of the Pioneer unit. Using those tabs is how they say to mount the unit in the instructions, but that seems to require some disassembly of the dash. Everything I read on the forum made this seem like a "plug and play" deal if you get wiring harnesses, so that's maybe why I'm a little confused. Seems like if you bend the tabs before you slide the unit in, it wouldn't fit.

By the way, it's a really nice stereo for the money. It was about $130.00 including the 2 harnesses and tax. Sounds really good, and the SuperTuner pulls in AM stations much better than the original. (OK, I know, I'm the last guy on earth who listens to AM radio ) They also have it at Walmart.

the sleeve he is talking about comes with the new deck. If you bought it new it wold already be on the deck and you need to slide it off put that in the hole where your old radio came from. there are little tabs that can be bent out to hold on to the dash. then you slide the plug in from the back of the sleeve and plug in to new deck and then slide in to sleeve. It will lock in to place put your bezel on. then you will have it in place and some thing holding it in place.

Ah Ha! Thanks Sacf250! It's midnight here in KY, and it's like 12 degrees outside right now, so I think I'll wait until morning to pull out the stereo and look at the "sleeve" setup. Hopefully I'll be good to go!

You can buy an install kit (usually about $20) that will have the plastic mount/clip that will go on that metal slide. I've been installing car stereos for years and may have one of the mounts in my junk box. I'll check it later this afternoon and if I do, I'll let you know and you are welcome to have it.

Thanks Big Daddy J. I may take you up on that. I didn't get time to go out and play around with it this afternoon, but hopefully over the holidays I can get out there and pull the new radio back out and see how the sleeve slips off. If not, I may be looking for your bracket!

RR, I didn't see the slide bracket but I have one more place to look. After looking through all my extra pieces, I would recommend using an install kit. The kit will have the rear slide bracket as well as a front mount that will allow the metal sleeve to attach to the dash and not the radio trim piece. Properly attaching will also help prevent theft...if it's only attached to that trim piece then all someone needs to do is pull that trim piece off and the unit comes right out.

He has a 95, which I believe came from the factory with a DIN style radio and should not need an installation kit apart from the wiring harness adapters.
I installed a Panasonic cd deck in my 95 F-150 and I did not need an install kit as far as the dashboard was concerned, the aftermarket deck and its sleeve fit right in.

Except even if you have it properly mounted, all they need are the little install tools that come with all new radios...
Best ways to actually prevent theft are remove the face plate and lock the doors... other than that, if they want it they're going to take it...

I didn't think of the differences in the years. Mine is an 87 and I got it with an aftermarket radio improperly installed so I definately needed a install kit in order to mount it to the factory dash mount. Didn't the 87's have a din size though? You are certainly right ubermich....if they want it bad enough...they're gonna get it regardless!! Before building my false floor box in the back, I had 2 amps stolen that were mounted inside the center console. Live and learn!!

JBronco: You are right about the DIN mount on my 95. The new Pioneer didn't come with a set of DIN tools, but I bought a set at Walmart for about $4.00. It took some "pullin" but the old unit finally came out. I just didn't realize that I needed to remove the sleeve from the new unit prior to shoving it in the hole. (May have been because I got so frustrated trying to find the ENGLISH part of the instructions that I tossed them aside and went by what looked right. Anway, once I get the thing pulled back out, I should be fine. Fortunately for me, I don't have to worry too much about it getting stolen. I take the faceplate with me if I leave it, lock the doors, and hope for the best!

I do think I'm going to upgrade the speakers now though. I notice that the new unit starts to clip and sound generally bad at around half volume. It's a 50W X 4 unit, and I'm not sure what the factory speakers are rated for but I'll bet it's less.
