Solution: Hard shifts / Uneven Idle
I wanted my first post to be helpful - so I hope it is.... 
I recently picked up a '95 F150 - but the idle went from 800 to 1500rpm - and down - and back - etc... Also - VERY hard shifts - full pressure.
In my case - it was simply a Throttle Position Sensor - $49.95 installed. All problems went away.
I just thought I'd share as when I had the problem I did a search of the site - and saw a bunch of folks had this issue....
I'm not saying it'll work for everybody with the problem - but it fixed mine...

I dis-assembled and cleaned my throttle body. I did not position the tps correctly and had the hard shifting and erratic idle. The tps must be turned slightly when installed.
