CLUNK into reverse

I think mine was not going all the way in gear, cause since I tighten the torx bolts at the end of my steering column its been running smoothing and shifting a lot better.

if the engine idle speed is to high it can cause it to cluck into reverse.

If your van is AWD, check to make sure the front differential mounts are tight. I've had trouble with mine. Once the mount was broken. When this happens, the tail of the differential will bounce on a bumper underneath it, and cause a serious loud "thunk" everytime you go into reverse.

mine is just the cheep rwd but I have noticed that it has two clunks, one when you first select reverse and then another when the tranny selects the gear and both are not so bad when the van is up to operating temp, strange or what?

From what I understand, the "clunk" is a Ford RWD "thing". Every Ford I've owned or heard "clunks" going into reverse. It could be the sign of bad tranny mounts,engine mounts, u-joints,etc. if it's REALLY bad. But other than that, I think it's normal.

My "old time" car guy uncle says it is normal and every RWD Ford if ever seen, even a brand-new Crown Vic, clunks into reverse. Why, I don't know..
