New 295 KO'S

Just put on a new set of BFG All Terrains in 295-75-16 on stock rims. I love it! Yes 295's will fit. (but boy is it close)lol ......I'm puttin the DR mini packs on order! I think other 285's would all be OK, its just the super square shoulder that gets it so close to the inner wheel well. Anyway, HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL (and thanks Santa for my new skins!!) LOL

I like the looks when you fill the wheelwell with the tire. The BFG's are always good looking tires.

I know, I was looking at it today, and I can't decide if I even want to level the front end.

Unclemuck,

Put some V 0r U codes up front. I put U codes on V10 Ex, gained 1.5 in height. Level front to back and better ride. I put 60K on 265 BFG's before I replaced with 265 Revos.

That sounds like a good way to go. I think the front end could use a little stiffer spring. 65K would work for me, I only pu about 7K a year on this thing. By that time I'll be ready for a Lincoln.....lol

Please excuse my ignorance of the "V and U code" info. Please explain the difference between the two. I am fam. w/tire speed rating but not springs; if in fact that is what "V or U" refers to. I intend to buy a new Excursion after the Xmas Holdiays and will have Ranch Hand type bumpers installed front and rear. These will add weight at both ends and the idea of HD springs that raise the height 1.5 sounds great.

Many thanks and Merry Xmas,

Fordone

Fordone,
The code for the springs is stricktly a Ford code. The higer the letter the higher the spring rate. Depending on the application (f350, F250...etc.) was how the letters were assigned.

Front axle weights used are 4080, & D code springs for the PSD and 3680, & C code springs for the V-10

Application---Code---Capacity-----Rate----Travel --------- V-10 ----- PSD
------------------------------------/spring---to Max Cap ----height ----height
---------------------------------------------------------------- change --- change
Exc V8 -------- B ----- 4100 ----- 330 ----- 5.02 ---------- -0.25 ----- -0.66
Exc V10 ------ C ----- 4300 ----- 350 ----- 5.01 ----------- 0.00 ----- -0.37
Exc PSD ------ D ----- 4700 ----- 380 ----- 5.14 ---------- +0.33 ------ 0.00

F250/350 All springs are computer selected
Also the use of a rear sway bar and what size it is package dependant
Application---Code---Capacity-----Rate----Travel ------------- V-10 ----- PSD
--------------------------------------- /spring---to Max Cap ----height ----height
------------------------------------------------------------------ change --- change
SD-250/350
------------------ S --------4000 ----- 370 ------ 4.34 --------- +1.22 --- +0.88
------------------ T --------4400 ----- 390 ------ 4.63 --------- +1.42 --- +1.11
------------------ U --------4800 ----- 410 ------ 4.89 --------- +1.60 --- +1.32
------------------ V --------5200 ----- 430 ------ 5.13 --------- +1.77 --- +1.50
F450 ----------- W --------5600 ----- 450 ------ 5.34 --------- +2.77 --- +2.52
F550 & 350/ DRW with Snow Plow prep Package
----------------- X-------- 6000 ----- 470 ------ 5.54 ---------- +2.90 --- +2.68

The table is a little jumbled, but the + numbers mean how much higher an Excursion will sit in the front with that letter spring.

Thanks Unclemuck. That charts been floating around awhile, from Bruce at ford-trucks. For V10 stick with U codes. With the V or X you will have to raise the rear.

I had Edelbrock shocks but they blew out with around 70K miles on them. Just replaced with Monroe Reflex and I also used longer front shocks (F-350 application) to compliment the U codes. Ride is even better now.

What would it cost for the V or U code springs? For the diesel is teh V code too much if the back is stock height?

<IMG SRC="http://www.martialartsacademy.org/offroadpicsmall.jpg">

Man this stuff is both fascinating...and frustrating for me. I bought a 2005 PSD 4x4 Eddie bauer Excursion the last day of sept, and so far have 7,000 miles on it, many, many of them hard off-road ones.
I am in great need of more front end travel, more shock damping, and larger tires, but also like the nice ride etc.

Until now I had no idea about the different springs and was trying to decide between:

After market springs

Longer hangers

spring packs

I would like to put larger tires and have more spring travel with minimal lift, say two-three inches max, if possible.

I would love any and all opinions and information, I really need to do something soon, many more trips planned right away...

Thanks!
