I have a 2004 F-150 4X4 Crew. When I stand just past the rear doors, at the side of the bed, I can not reach items in the bed close to the cab. I have step rails that came with the truck but they do not extend past the rear doors. Anyone know of a side step available to assist in reaching items in the bed? I would like to put a tool box on but I would have to lower the tail gate and crawl into the bed to get anything out. I am getting to old for that.
check out www.f150store.com. They make a step that fits on your tire so you can reach stuff out of that deep o'l bed we got. They've got anything you want for your F-150.
Well, you can always look at taking off the stock running boards and put on some wheel-to-wheel step bars. They'll cost you a few bucks, but some things might be worth the money to you.
I got these at a local accessory shop. They are made by Iron Cross Automotive. They don't have a website yet. The box is made by Tuffy. My woman got it at a local accessory store also.
I love the depth of the bed for hauling etc etc - but like you, have a heck of
a time getting things out of the front of the bed. A very cheap way to help
aleviate the problem is to buy one of those 2/3 step (folding) aluminum
step stools at H-Depot/Lowes/Ace etc etc. They are very light, easy to handle
and fit easily in the bed when you're thru with it. I didn't like the thing rattling
arounf in the bed tho - so I bought some wire-ties and that rubberized shelf
liner stuff and wrapped the legs of the ladder so it wouldn't scoot around
in the bed while driving. A nice touch for future F150 model years might be a
slide-out platform mounted under the bed (just forward of the rear wheel wells
to assist with loading/unloading). These are all "usability" issues (also see my
12/21 post "tailgate revalations") and would ideally be addressed before
new owners take delivery - Ford r-u listening? BTW - even with these minor
nit-noy issues, I still love my truck!!!
Sometimes I can't reach small items that have rolled into the middle of the bed. I just use the 'ol back tire as a step and climb right on up in there.

Ditto, I do the same.
I did jump out of the back once...not again, long drop for me and my bad back
