With K&N air filter, my 05 escape is only getting 17.5 mpg with summer gas, but its new, onlyy 3000 miles so far. Might get better mpg later.

The northern US states have a winter blend that reduces mileage about 5%. I get over 300 miles on a 2002 XLS V6 (4x2) but thats highway miles (24mpg+). Depending on your driving habits, you could get much lower if it's all in-town driving and you like to see the RPMs hit 6k+ all the time. Also, you didn't mention your mpgs. If you're like my wife and fill up at 1/4 tank, then 220 miles on 10 gallons is 22mpg.

Angry Gas Mileage

I used to have a 2001 V6 in New York City and yes, mileage went down in the winter especially in city driving. Getting 250 miles for a tank seems about
right in stop-and-go traffic. Plus, as previous poster mentioned, winter-mix fuel does make mileage per gallon go down. Don't think I had that bad mileage after break-in, though -- my average was always in the high teens/low 20's in the winter. About how many miles on the truck? And what are your driving habits?

Angry Check it out

There must be something else affecting your mileage. I ran my 2001 to 55k before I traded it in and never had it so bad (low teens). You're getting less than an Explorer, say Expedition on a bad day!

Something's up. My 98 F150 with the small V8 got 17mpg. You've only got 30k miles so it shouldn't be the plugs. Since it's running okay (no misses, etc) I wouldn't think plugs or coil packs. Check engine isn't on so no codes showing anything. Your mpgs would probably be on the low side based upon only 30k miles. Guessing, either the truck is driven primarily in-town or not frequently on the highway but I'd think you'd still get close to 20mpg. Has it always done this poorly? Anything changed/replaced lately?

mileage

Since this question came up a couple weeks ago and I was about to go on a long trip, I decided to keep close track of the mileage. The results surprised me. the trip took me from Boston to Mississippi and back so it was all interstate mileage except as noted. here are the results...

Miles Gal. mpg Conditions Gas Origin
362.5 14.567 24.885 65 mph rain MA
332.5 12.221 27.207 70 mph - dry PA
335 14.04 23.860 70 mph dry VA
321 13.538 23.711 70 mph dry TN
306 13.977 21.893 mixed MS
141.2 6.749 20.921 mixed MS
273.1 9.974 27.381 67 mph - dry MS
311.7 13.377 23.301 70 mph - windy GA
286.4 13.075 21.904 73 mph - cold VA
201.2 9.565 21.035 70 mph - headwind MD
282.5 12.228 23.102 75 mph -tailwind PA

Where I have a speed listed it is the speed I had the cruise control set on. traffic was light the who;e trip so I was able t okeep the speed fairly constant. The last three fillups were today and it was windy and cold here in the northeast. I noticed that Chevron gas gave me slightly higher mileage but it could be a coincidence with good travel conditions. Anyway, there they are...

I don't like the way that got formatted once I posted it - the colums are

Miles for the tank, gallons to fill it to overflowing, the mileage, the speed and weather and the state the gas came from. Not sure where they are selling winter gas other than here in MA....

That's a huge variability, basically 21-27mpg depending on the weather conditions? Makes me fear for my drive to MN this spring. Could be much worse on the mixed driving, though. Very informative though. I just filled my tank for the second time, and got 17.5 mpg on the first tank from the dealer. I didn't figure that was too bad for 50/50 hiway/city. I know you're not supposed to check until 3000 miles, but I gotta know, I'm compulsive that way.

I am still trying to figure out the temp/mileage relationship. I had thought it was strictly due to the winter gas but it seems to be more related to the temperature. I have been tracking the mileage since I got it and 27 is the best yet and 17 seems to be the average when wifey uses it around town....

Where in Eastern MA are you splashtm?

These are by far the most "cold-blooded" vehicles I have ever owned. As soon as the temp drops below the 40's, the mileage drops right along with it.
I have owned 2, a 2001 Trib V6 AWD (40,000 miles) and a 2003 Trib V6 AWD (20,000 miles). They both act the same way in the cold. Also, I lived in Pittsburgh PA with the 01 and now live in SC with the 03. No difference in the cold, just less cold here.

I think my Trib warms up pretty darn fast, engine and interior, which was a concern I had coming from a reg cab Ranger. The owners' manual also recommends against warming it up(?) I do wonder about that bit of wisdom, But I lost serious mpg in the winter when I would warm the truck for 15 minutes every morning. I do think it won't start if it gets much below zero, unfortunatly.

Peabody here, splashtm

I read a long time ago that on cold days it is better to start a vehicle, let it idle for a minute or so then drive it gently until it reaches operating temp. It will warm up quicker and not waste a bunch of gas. Probably burns a bunch of gas running rich when cold and is effectively getting 0 mpg. The wife lets it warm up for 10 or 15 minutes and it definitely shows in the mileage.
