Why is there so much conflicting info on the effects of removing the air pump? I've run searches on the three forums that apply to my vehicle and am more confused then ever. 94 F150 4x4 with a 302. Probably Hooker long tube equal length headers, dual exhaust with either an H or X pipe. The O2 sensor will go in the collector on one side or maybe in the crossover. The original cats are junk and won't be used. I'll leave them out or use modern cats that don't need the air pump. Does the air pump on a 94 do more than supply air to the cat? Since part of the plumbing for the system is hidden between the engine, intake, and manifold, I can't tell where it all goes. Is this system tied in with the EGR system that needs to be retained? I don't have to deal with vehicle inspection but with proper setup and tuning will have a less polluting truck anyway. Also, can you guys reccomend a good service manual that applies specifically to this truck? Any other good reference maierials? The haynes manual I have covers so many different years and models it's almost worthless.

I ran into the smog pump dilemma a few months ago when I had true dual exhaust put on my truck. We went with two high flow cats without the air tubes so the pump wasn't needed for the cats so we bypassed the smog pump with a shorter belt. The airpump also feeds an inlet on a crossover pipe that connects to the back of the heads but I've had no problems or check engine lights whatsover by bypassing the smog pump.
Eventually I might completely remove the smog pump and put plugs in the back of the heads but for now it is still reversable should it need be.
I gained good mid to upper rpm power and the sound is much better with the true duals and shorties, well almost true dual because of the crossover pipe tying the two exhaust pipes together. Doing this helps with low end torque and exhaust note.
In the future, please keep subjects separate...the exhaust question belongs in the exhaust forum...the air pump question I myself would probably leave here....Please view my thread titled "want my truck" on the top of this forum for an explanation of what belongs and what doesn't belong in this forum. Thanks...
