10 MPG. Woohoo!

The FE446 posted 10+ MPG on a trip to the coast yesterday. I know it's nothing to get excited about. But, I really figured it was getting even worse mileage. Well, that was just on the section that I kept it between 60-65mph.

We also verified that the speedo and the odometer were pretty close to accurate. My speedo quits at 80mph. I tried to show my roadtrip buddy. I told him that it just stopped at 80mph. He said, "thats probably as fast as this big old truck goes" . I proceeded to floor it at 80mph. The secondaries opened up and threw us both back in our seats. He then acknowledged taht the speedo had a problem :-) If I could just get it to pull like that all the way down the track...It is impressive for a 4600lb brick

A good day in all. We sucked down a lot of gas. I definitely need another fuel cell. But the truck ran well and made 350-400 miles in a day without any issues. That's pretty impressive, considering I assembled, rebuilt or replaced most of the truck :-)

Wow! 10mpg is excellent for a 446ci, carbureted, high-performance engine in a truck. I would be sending out cigars to everybody if I could get mine that high.

Good job! Glad it made the whole trip without any mishaps.
Do you have 4.10's??
With the big 16" tires it probably really helped knock them down a bit.

Back in '90 when I put my 428 in my '69 it still had the 3.25 gears out back. It was getting 15+ mpg on the highway. Now with 4.56's, it averages about 6-7 mpg IF you can keep your foot out of it and stay under 3500 rpm on the highway. If I want to drive it to work one day....I have to plan on $15 for fuel minmum

I run 255-70r16s. Not too tall. I think they comapre to stock size tires.

The A/F gauge is still showing slightly rich across the board. So, there might be some mileage improvements there as well. I'm very much considering an OD now. It might take a while to pay for itself in gas. But, just to get the RPMs down to the low 2000s on the highway would sure feel good. And who knows, I might be able to see 12mpg one day :-)

You can't beat the feeling of the ride. My 390 takes a bite out of me $$. Gives me a chance to buy lotto tickets at different gas stations a long my trip.

funny you mentiooned that. I bought lotto tickets in one of the small towns when we stopped for gas..I rarely buy lotto, but for some reasons on roadtrips I feel like I should...I guess it's because the winers are always from some other town :-)

I bought the Summit generic brand A/F guage and the reccomended sending units and weld-in bungs. I just have one gauge for now, but 2 sending units. I'll probably install another gauge. The sending units are just behind the header collectors.

Summit part number for the gauge: SUM-G2986

It's nice to be able to make the round trip under power (vs. being towed), isn't it?

Up until recently, a successful trip was one that the truck made it to and back from the destination under it's own power. But now, the project has graduated. Now, I consider comfort, mileage, performance etc. in the measurement of success.

Now, one of my biggest problems is wind noise...all the seals are shot :-(

I guess it's a sign of progress

Good job Greg! You'll be at 15mpg in no time.

If you get a good source for those seals, let me know. I'm having a wind noise / draft problem too. And up here in Iowa in winter, that draft sucks.
