One thing about overclocking...it's not an exact science, but more of a trial and error thing. The overclock you can attain will entirely depend on your CPU, motherboard, ram, and chipset, and not neccessarily in that order. For older pc's overclocking made more sense than it does for newer pc's. Take a look at the new generation of 64 bit AMD cpu's...they've eliminated the FSB altogether...these things are just plain fast...and with a lower clock speed than their Athlon pre-decessors, are whipping the pants off them at anything they do, and feeding them for breakfast without breaking a sweat. The new generation Intel chips still use FSB, but are plenty fast as well, they just handle things in a slightly different way, but don't overclock worth a damn.
If you really want to know if an overclock made your system faster in actual fact(sometimes the clock speed shows faster, the system is stable, but under load it performs worse) run some serious benchmarks on it, like Sandra, and Aquamark, and a few others as well.

I'm not sure RR4E about the AMD64's not having a FSB, I have the AMD64 3200 and I have a FSB, as a matter of fact I'm overclocking 5% which roughly equivocates to around 160 Mhz, no problems. Please let me know if I'm wrong.
93GreenF150 Keep in mind that in order to run your CPU at a higher frequency, you have to overclock your ram as well. The newer boards like MSI, Abit, etc. usually include some type of overclocking settings in the bios, that's proly the safest/most stable way to overclock your system. I agree with the cooling. In my case I'm running 6 fans, ball bearing fan on CPU and copper core heat sink.
So far so good. Computer has been running straight since last night. Did an overnight Thorough Scandisk. And I just finished a 6 hour long Defrag....Phew...
Any programs to 'clean' registry?
Overcloking RAM? I'll try to look for that in BIOS. This board is an old i810. My PC only sees half of RAM because it wants pc100 SDRAM. I have pc133 on it. Also, One of the sticks is Kingstons' ValueRAM which according to their website, an i810 board only sees half of it.
the old celeries of the p2 style where long known for being able to go 50% over and stay stable. check out tomshardware.com and anandtech.com and do a search for overclocking tom was one of the first to post how and what to do way way back. good luck
I don't think Athlon 64's have a physical FSB like other processors, but it is often referred to as the FSB for simplicity's sake as it does roughly the same thing. I believe the FSB is no longer needed because of the integrated memory controller and HyperTransport link.
My A64 is slightly overclocked, from 1800 to 2000 MHz. My junk motherboard does not get along well with raised FSB speeds.
