I have a '99 Ranger with the 4 litre V6 that has a rattle in the bottom end. You only hear this when it's idling. I don't think it's a bearing noise, since it's continued to make the noise for to long w/o grenading. My local dealer "decarbonized" it as per a Ford service bulletin, which really didn't seem to help. Has any one else had experence with this ? What did your dealer do ?
Thanks
I also have the 4.0 in a 99 Ranger. Engine is very noisy. Had the same problem in a 96 Ford Explorer that I used to own. Another guy told me that XR1 quieted the engine noise and boosted fuel economy. I am going to try it.
I'd like to know what the "XR1" is and i have a 99 ranger 4.0 and i get an engine noise too but its when it is idleing it makes a clicking noise every few mins. Does anyone know what that is? Is that the same noise you guys are talking about?
The noise I have sounds like a combination of a light rod knock and piston slap, but not regular in time with the engine RPM,it seems kind of random. The noise you describe could be either a tappet/valve noise or you are hearing your fuel injectors. They will emit a clicking sound as the engine is running.
I also have a 4.0L. I do notice some rattling, but I wonder if it is a heat shield vibrating. The clicking noise you're referring to is probably your A/C compressor, which will run in all positions except for Off, Floor, and Vent.
There is a condition called "marbling" unique to 98-99 4.0 engines. In certain cases Ford is offering a new engine. Your engine sounds like it has the symptoms. Supposedly the engines have not failed, but soud bad.
Hope this helps.
Ford also has some TSB's on this (read the posts related to the problem scroll down a while).
There is a common failure with the SOHC motors that causes a noise like what you guys have described. The chain tensioner were a bad design from the start. If they went too long it destroyed the guides, and possibly the engine. It was so much of an issue that Ford offers to repair the defect up to 7 years or 100K. You'll need to find out if your truck is covered under this TSB. The dealer can check it by your vin. My 97 explorer had the same issue, and I have seen at least 10 trucks a year come in with some kind of chain concern.
If you send me your vin I can check them for you, if I get too many inquires it may take some time to get back to you.
I own a 1999 ford ranger and the marbeling noise in my engine has drove me nuts for two years, i had a ford dealer "decarbonize" the engine and that didnt help and last week i read somewhere to use restore so i changed my oil and put in a can of "restore" and within 200 miles of driveing the marbeling noise that i had at idle is gone. It works , the first time an additive has ever worked for me, i recomend this, it works
