I didn't think I was making fun of anyone, myself. I've lived in Montana all my life. The average teenager in most other states makes more $$ in a year than the average wage in Montana. I guess, by money standards, most of us here could be classified trailor trash...even if we don't all live in trailors. And there are a lot of trailor courts here, but are mostly kept in very presentable condition. There are plenty of rich here ... look in any real estate catalog here. Unbelievable.
So far this thread has been pretty good natured and I'm sure no one here hates or totally condems the folks who choose to or by happenstance end up living in conditions as shown in the photo essay. Some people have different standards of living. If you wish...I can photograph my brothers place. LOL ... a few of them places look pretty good compared to his lifestyle and give-a- hoot attitude. I don't really care either. I don't have to live there. I visit him nearly every day and it doesn't bother me a bit.
All in all, I was reminded of a lot of the people around here who are total zoning freaks. But that delves into the political spectrum and I shall not go there.
The only thing I dislike about some of those pics is the fact that the people seem to not care enough to clean up the yard. If the house looks like trash on the outside, you will have a warped view of the people on the inside without ever seeing the gem of interior.
I had somebody say to me that it must be terrible having a bulldozing company right next door, what with the noise sometimes and...why sometimes they're even working on them late at night. Welding even!!! Figured that the day I gave somebody heck for working, maybe I should give myself a shake. Great neighbours and never do I ever have them telling me that my lawn isn't cut to somebodys specs. or that I've got the shop lights on all night cause I'm working on something (read playing). Lots of folks would find the way that I live wouldn't fit into a suburban neighbourhood...but then I don't live in one..by choice.
Poking fun at somebodys junk in the yard is one of those things that you do at your own risk. Me I laugh at it..others might get real resentful in an awful hurry. Nature of the beast.
I am not "poking fun at someone's misfortune" as it was said. I was merely pointing out that we have a "southside" up here in Fairbanks as well. And I know some people do not have the opportunity to live in a posh neighborhood - heck MY neighborhood ain't all that great! But I would have a lot more respect and sympathy for someone who tried to keep their place nice, even if it was a hole in the wall, than to have them use their situation as an excuse to collect trash in their yard and bring the place down further.
I live in CT (supposedly one of the richest states) and I am fortunate enough to live in a decent neighborhood. However, there are still places around the state that look worse than the pictures. Even if the people don't have a lot of money, at least they could TRY to have their yards cleaned up one way or the other. The prices of housing themselves in this state is weird as well. For example you could buy a decent sized home in say Manchester for about $220,000. Go to Glastonbury, that same house would cost at least 280,000 + outrageous taxes. Oh well, I'm off my soap box now
Bottom line, IMHO, is that everyone has different standards of living. It's kind of like what's on the television. If you don't like what you're seeing, turn the channel. In this case we several options..... take a different route, turn our head & look the other way and go home to our own little piece of paradise and leave the other guy alone. It all boils down to other people wanting to force their standard of living ( and costs associated) on someone else.
Don't get me wrong. I myself, like to keep my yard and home looking nice and keep the value up as best I can afford. I live in a Condo. I don't have a lot of choice anyway. If I had a few acres, who knows what I'd use it for. I could end up like some of those guys you see on TV, with a ball of yarn 20 feet around, or "art"..buried car noses with the rear ends sticking in the air. Beauty is DEFINITELY in the eye of the beholder.
Hmm, Ford trucks buried up to their windshields in my front yard, beds sticking up in the air...nah, couldn't do it a Ford, don't want a Chevy in my yard! I'll have to find another way to express myself! -TD
