Help identifying transmission type and shifting problem
I just bought a 1981 Bronco with a supposedely 302. It has an automatic and it won;t shift out of 1st gear. I have tried shifting it manually and it won't shift out of 1st. I cannot locate the modulator valve on it and I believe it has to have one. I bought a new valve and a Haynes manual and I have been under the thing 8 or 9 times and I cannot locate it. I have little history on the vehicle since I bought it at a sale. I thought anything that was an 81 model would have to have a modulator valve no matter what type of tranny was in it. When I bought it they did say the carburetor had been changed recently and that the tranny had been shifting OK. Because of the carburetor change I suspected a vacuum problem and began to trace hoses and look for the modulator valve. I just can't find one. I did find a
the big rubber hose coming out of the top front of tranny that looks like a vent tube. According to the manual the valve should be on the rear or passenger side just above the pan. Its not their. I wonder if the tranny has been changed before to something different. How do I identify the tranny to know if its a C-6 or not? I have changed these valves before years ago and know where they are normally located but this has got me stumped and any help would be appreciated, thanks. Since posting I have potentially identified the tranny as a C5 according to the hump or dip in the tranny pan and the pan is square. The haynes manual showed a picture of a pan with one corner in a "L" shape.
Is the pan square with 14 bolts and a small pyramid shaped hump in the middle? If so you might have an AOD transmission which doesn't have a modulator. It has a TV cable that must be hooked to the throttle linkage and adjusted correctly or you will burn up the trans.

YES!! It definitely has the hump or pyramid shape in the center of the pan and it is square, I will double check the number of bolts tommorrow. The transmission selector only has drive 2 and 1. Please tell me more since I am not familiar with this setup. I will have to make repairs myself so all info would be greatly appreciated.
