I just bought a '99 f350 PSD a few months ago. It now has 108k miles. The trans oil cooling line leaked all of the fluid out without me knowing until of course it would not move anymore. It seems to have damaged the torque converter acording to my shop. I am reading slip codes on my Edge Evolution. I have been quoted anything from $1800 at my trans shop to $3000 or more from the Ford dealer for a new trans with a 3 year warranty. I was quoted $2400 from one shop. He would update the converter with a special torque converter and a few other mods, which seems like that my be my best option for better performance in the future. Any ideas on this? Of course that is a lot of money for me after just buying this truck no matter which option I choose.
Personally, I would go with an upgraded tranny and better T/C than stock. It might cost a little more, but I think you will be much happier having a stronger tranny in there, and it should easily handle the power of the engine. The stock trannies aren't bad, but they aren't great either.
Check this site out: http://www.brianstruckshop.com/, or do a search for BTS transmissions on this forum. I personally don't have one, but heard nothing but great reviews about them.
Supposed to be very good trannies. Also heard great stuff about BTS.
I had a local shop rebuild mine. New HD TC, all new HD internals, new valve body, shift kit, and a 60000lb gvwr cooler. All for $1800.
