Type rear end ratio??

This is my first post. I have a chance to purchase a 1994 RangerXTL, 2wd, 4.0 engine, with 89000 miles on the odometer. Is there a easy way to tell if it has a posi traction, and what rear end ratio it has? Can this be done from the VIN? Anyone opinions concerning this year and the 89000 miles would be much appreciated. I'm on a fixed income, and would sure like to have a small pickup that is reliable, and gets good mileage. Any opinions would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Jesse

On the rear axle is a tag #. It us usually stamped on the housing. This number will tell you what axle and the ratio in installed. I found mine on the rear and on the front of the pumpkin (differential).

I was just curious of what kind of a deal you found on that 94 ranger??? Is it an extended cab?

There will be a thin metal tag on one of the rear end cover bolts. It will have the ratio, e.g. 3 08-the first number (in this case, 3) is usually half buried under the bolt head. If it's a limited slip it will have an L in the ratio number e.g.3L08.
