Engine Swap Help Needed

Hello first off Id like to say thanx for letting me join this group. Last summer the cam gear on my 300ci straight 6 went south so I let her sit. Now my truck is a 1980 ford f-150 with as i just said a 300 straight 6 backed by a 4 speed manual trans. I just pulled a 302 v8 out of a 1983 ford f-150 As far as I can tell it apears to me that it bolts up in the same spot the 300 did. Is this correct? The donor truck was a automatic but i got the motor mounts from the donor truck as well. This apears to be a simple transplant but Id like to know for sure what I have to look forward too. What would you all recomend for a good by fair priced cam to gave me a little more lower end without killing the upper end? Hope I didnt ask too many questions in one post. Im new here and apoligise for my running on.

You'll likely need a flywheel, and clutch kit as well to make it all work. Be sure to ID whether this engine is internally or externally balanced, and get the appropriate clutch kit for the truck it's going to be installed in, in regards to engine and trans. Replacing the release bearing, and getting a potential used flywheel re-surfaced are good ideas as well. Most clutch kits include the bearing, but re-surfacing is essential to avoid premature clutch wear, and gain of the best fuel mileage and performance. The bell-housing should be the same, but double check it. easier to pull a bellhousing off and mate it to an engine, than try and install the engine and find out it doesn't work.

Is the 302 a carbed engine? Is your 300 I6? You might also need to change ignitions as well, as some I6's had computer controlled carbs and distributors. Take as many parts off the donor vehical as possible, they can always be sold later, or at the very least tossed out. Never to many parts when doing a conversion, but there is such a thing as never enough.

More info and a couple more questions

Thanx RR4E, Yes the motor currently in my truck is a inline 6 1 barrel carb that someone put in out of a 66 ford truck before I bought it. The 302 I got has a carb as well and I took the ignition box from the donor truck as well as the whole front clip. I was that the bellhousings are all the same for 300 inline 6 and all small block fords up to the 351 w and c. I bought a new clutch but didnt even think of not having the correct flywheel. I guess i was thinking it would be the same as the 300 straight 6. Or maybe this little factor just slipped my mind all together. I also got the whole front clip and doors off this truck as well as some interior pieces. Also got the radiator from the 302 donor truck as well. My main concern is if the motor bolts into the same holes as the 300 straight or inline 6 did. It looked like they did as far as i can see. Thanx for the reply and look forward to a response.

Respects
Pan

The I6 and the 302, as far as I know, do bolt up to the same bell housing, although there are differences amongst some years of the two, and one has to be wary. The flywheel will be necessary, as the I6 is balanced by a counter shaft, where the 302 is not. Won't hurt to replace the pilot bushing/bearing(depending on which) at the same time. Automatics do not come with pilot bearings or bushings, standards do, so you'll need one or the other, depending on what your combination calls for.
